Donald Trump warns China against" substantial increase " in import duties
Donald Trump said that the United States would impose a 10% tariff on Chinese products worth nearly USD 300 billion. This would be in addition to the 25% import duty on Chinese products worth USD 250 billion.
Washington:
U.S. President Donald Trump warned Friday to impose substantial tariffs on imports from China if trade negotiations did not proceed properly.
"China must do many things to turn the situation around. But you'll see. They have to do a lot of things. It (tariff increase) takes place on September 1, " said Trump one day after his announcement the imposition of 10% tariffs on Chinese products worth nearly USD 300 billion.
This is in addition to the 25% import duty on Chinese products worth USD 250 billion.
The next round of US-China trade negotiations is scheduled for September.
"Frankly, if they don't, I can still increase it very substantially. In other words, I could increase it. If I wanted to, I could increase it to a much higher number," he said.
Observing that the US was "so far behind" China before he became President, Trump said America had been treated badly.
"And I don't blame China. I blame our former leaders, our former presidents, our former sales representatives. They did a terrible job, " he said.
"We can't just make an equal deal with China. We need to make a much better deal. Because, for the moment, they have a very unfair playground, and I'm overthrowing it. We have 25 of 250 billion dollars and we will now get 10% of a total close to 350 billion dollars. It's a lot of money, " he said.
Donald Trump added that China was devaluing their currency and they were also pouring money.
"Their money goes to the devil, but they also pay money. This will totally pay for the rates. Tariffs are not paid by our citizens; they are paid by China because of devaluation and because they inject money, " he said.
Donald Trump said the United States was recovering billions of dollars from China.
