London: The British will be encouraged to plant trees to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's accession to the throne as part of a plan to create a greener country in honor of her seven decades of service.

The 94-year-old Queen, the longest reign in British history, is set to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee in February 2022.

The government is planning a four-day celebration that summer, including a public holiday for an extra day, with tree planting as a feature of achievement, according to Sunday's announcement.

The charity-backed project, dubbed "The Queen's Green Canopy," will encourage communities, schools, councils and landowners to plant native trees to help the environment and make local areas greener.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the health crisis and the pandemic had reminded people of the importance of nature and green spaces and that trees could change societies as well as tackle climate change.

“As we celebrate 70 years of Her Majesty's amazing service, I encourage everyone to support this scheme and go to Plant a Tree for the Jubilee,” Johnson said.

The Charities Cool Earth Foundation and the Woodland Trust said planting the trees would create a special gift for the Queen, who planted more than 1,500 trees around the world during her reign.

Elizabeth, also the world's oldest and longest-reigning monarch, became Queen on February 6, 1952, after the death of her father, King George VI.

The British royal family has been a vocal activist on a host of environmental issues, with Elizabeth's son Prince Charles speaking for decades about the impact of climate change and the importance of preserving the environment, and her grandson Prince William assuming responsibility.
