5 Killed In Shooting At US State Of North Carolina, Suspect In Custody
Five people, including an off-duty police officer, were killed in a shooting Thursday in the southern US state of North Carolina, the local mayor told journalists.
A shooting Thursday in Raleigh, North Carolina, killed at least five people, including an off-duty police officer, officials in the southeastern US city of Raleigh said, adding that a suspect had been arrested.
Raleigh Mayor Mary Ann Baldwin said the shooting took place near the Neues River Road, a popular road in the area.
"This is a sad and tragic day for the city of Raleigh. After 5 pm today, several people were shot," she said at a press conference.
"Five people were killed, one of whom was an off-duty police officer in Raleigh," the Raleigh Police Department confirmed.
The shooter, a "white juvenile", was arrested shortly after 9:30 p.m.,
Raleigh Police Lt. Jason Borneo said at a follow-up news conference.
The mayor had previously reported that the police had "detained them in a house in the area."
Borneo said one of the victims remained in critical condition.
Also among the wounded was a dog officer who was taken to hospital.
Although Borneo reported the release of an injured police officer.
When asked about the motive behind the shooting, he said it was likely to "come true" in the coming days.
"Terror tonight has arrived at our doorstep," North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, who attended the evening news conference, told reporters.
"Every society's nightmare has arrived in Raleigh. This is a senseless, horrific and outrageous act of violence that has been perpetrated."

"We have to do more," Baldwin said at the press conference.
"We must stop this senseless violence in America. We must address gun violence. We have a lot to do, and tonight we have a lot to mourn."
The North Carolina shooting occurred after a jury earlier today rejected the death penalty and upheld the life sentence for Nicholas Cruz, who shot and killed 17 people at a Florida high school in 2018.
