Opening an important meeting of the Chinese Communist Party, Chinese President Xi Jinping said China had achieved comprehensive control of Hong Kong, turning it from chaos to governance, while condemning what he said was interference in Taiwan.

1) Xi Jinping took to the stage to thunderous applause from about 2,300 delegates gathered in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing for the five-yearly Communist Party Congress that he is scheduled to adjourn to a third term.

2) "The situation in Hong Kong has made a great transition from chaos to governance,
Xi told Communist Party delegates at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, while pledging a "great struggle against separatism and interference" on the self-ruled island of Taiwan.

3) He said the solution to the Taiwan issue is up to the Chinese people, and China will never give up its right to use force.
"We will commit ourselves to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and greatest efforts, but we will never commit to giving up the use of force," he said.

4) After months of criticism of the effects of his country's strict non-proliferation policy,
Xi said China has put "people and their lives first" when dealing with the epidemic.
He said China has "protected people's safety and health to the highest degree and achieved important positive results in coordinating epidemic prevention and control."

5) Addressing concerns that the imminent decline in China's population could harm the world's second largest economy, Xi said China will put in place a political system to boost birth rates and pursue a proactive national strategy in response to an aging population.

6) Xi also highlighted the "success" of his anti-graft campaign,
which saw thousands of people imprisoned. He said the crackdown on corruption had eliminated "serious latent dangers" within the country's ruling party and military.

8) The president also said that Beijing opposes a "Cold War mentality" in international diplomacy, though he made no mention of strained relations with the United States. "China resolutely opposes all forms of hegemony and power politics, opposes the Cold War mentality, opposes interference in other countries' domestic politics, opposes double standards,
" He said.

9) Xi said China will accelerate the building of a world-class army and enhance its ability to build a strategic deterrence capability. "China will aim for high-quality economic growth, and the next five years will be crucial to building a modern socialist force," he said.
