South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a period of national mourning on Sunday after a Halloween crush killed some 151 people in a packed nightlife area in Seoul.
South Korean President Yun Seok-yeol on Sunday declared a period of national mourning after a stampede on Halloween claimed the lives of some 151 people in a crowded Seoul nightlife area.
President Yun expressed his condolences to the victims and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
"This is truly tragic," he said in a statement.
“A tragedy and disaster that should have happened in the heart of Seoul last night.”
A huge crowd celebrating in the popular Itaewon neighborhood burst into an alley Saturday night, emergency officials said, adding that the death toll could rise.
Choi Seung-bum, head of the Yongsan Fire Station, said in a statement at the site that 76 other people were injured in the clash.
