Suella Braverman's Reappointment By Rishi Sunak Draws Criticism
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Tuesday brought back Indian-origin Suella Braverman as the Home Secretary in his newly-formed Cabinet.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Tuesday reinstated Suila Braverman of Indian descent as Home Secretary in his newly formed government.
Hours after pledging to lead the Conservative Party with "integrity, professionalism and accountability", Sunak reappointed Braverman, who resigned last week over a technical breach of government rules.
Braverman's reappointment drew sharp criticism from across the UK political spectrum.
Rishi Sunak at Lunchtime: “This government will have integrity, professionalism and accountability at all levels. "
After violating official ministerial rules and “dreaming” of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda,” tweeted Caroline Lucas, Member of Parliament.
"A truly terrible appointment - one of the cruellest and most deceitful people in public life," Steve Pierce, a professor at the University of Essex, wrote on Twitter.
Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper accused Sunak of putting his party ahead of his country.
"He just appointed Suila Braverman as Home Secretary again a week after she resigned for a ministerial act breach, a security lapse, and sensitive government information being sent through unauthorized personal channels,
And after weeks of incessant public disagreements with other ministers in the government.”
Earlier this month, Braverman was at the center of the controversy over classifying Indians as the "largest group of overstayers" on their UK visas.
"Look at immigration in this country -
"The largest group of overstayers are Indian immigrants," she said in an interview with The Spectator.
Braverman's hard-line reset has been described as "pessimistic".
"The appointment of Suila Braverman as Minister of the Interior a few days after her dismissal for a security breach does not reflect integrity and competence,
Professionalism or reasonable policy. It's just a cynical maneuver. This prime minister is no better than the last two," Labor MP Chris Bryant tweeted.
