US Woman Claims L'Oreal Hair Products Caused Cancer, Sues Company
An American woman who contracted uterine cancer after using chemical hair straightening products sold by L'Oreal USA sued the company on Friday, her lawyer said.
A US woman who developed uterine cancer after using chemical straightening products sold by L'Oreal USA filed a lawsuit against the company on Friday, her attorney said.
The woman, Jenny Mitchell, said in the civil lawsuit that she has used the products for more than two decades,
She then developed uterine cancer, which forced her to undergo a full hysterectomy.
The lawsuit comes just days after a study was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute proving a link between the use of chemical hair-straightening products and uterine cancer.
The study found that women who used the products more than four times a year were more than twice as likely to develop uterine cancer than those who did not use the products.
Uterine cancer is relatively rare, but its incidence is rising in the United States, especially among black women.
"Black women have long been victims of dangerous products specifically marketed to them," Ben Crump, a personal injury attorney at Mitchell, said in a statement.
The civil lawsuit filed on Friday seeks damages from the US subsidiary of L'Oreal, the French cosmetics giant, among other companies.
"We'll probably find out that the tragic Mitchell case is one of countless cases in which companies aggressively misled black women to increase their profits," Crump said.
