Chief scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr Soumya Swaminathan on Thursday said the death of children in Gambia, potentially linked to four Indian-made cough syrups, was a serious issue.
The World Health Organization's chief scientist, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, said on Thursday that the deaths of children in The Gambia, likely linked to four Indian-made cough medicines, had been a serious problem.
Ms. Swaminathan was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the DCVMN's Annual General Meeting.
A World Health Organization report linked the deaths of 66 children in The Gambia to four Indian-made cough medicines.

The government is in contact with the WHO as the WHO has already submitted the report based on the investigation that was done to prove that it was due to diethylene glycol contamination. "It is a very serious issue and it must be taken very seriously," said Dr. Swaminathan.

Drug regulators said there was a need to coordinate their operations.
"There are no mechanisms where regulators from different countries can work together, and carry out inspections of each other's products," she said.
