Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed Sunday that China will "never commit to abandoning the use of force" when it comes to the Taiwan issue, in a speech marking the start of the Communist Party Congress in Beijing.
"The solution to the Taiwan issue is a matter for the Chinese themselves, and it should be resolved by the Chinese people alone.
We will commit ourselves to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and greatest efforts, but we will never commit to giving up the use of force, and reserve the option to take all necessary measures," Xi told Communist Party delegates at the Great Beijing Conference.
China sees autonomy,
Democratic Taiwan as part of its territory, it must one day be restored with military intervention if necessary.
"The historical wheels of national reunification and national rejuvenation are moving forward," Xi added. The reunification of the motherland must and will be achieved."
Xi condemned "separatism and interference" in the matter.
He also praised Hong Kong's transition from a state of "chaos to governance", after the imposition of a national security law in 2020 that suppressed dissent in the once-outspoken city.
