Facebook Adds Feature To Remove Misinformation From Groups

Facebook on Thursday added a method for people running groups to automatically sift out claims that have been debunked since being posted.

On Thursday, Facebook added a way for people who manage groups to automatically check claims that have been debunked since they were posted.
The ability of group officials to send misinformation to the "quarantine queue" comes ahead of the US midterm elections, as well as on Facebook-
Parent company Meta continues to fend off critics who say it isn't doing enough to combat misinformation on its platforms.

The tool allows those who manage groups to automatically migrate to new quarantine posts that have been flagged as containing false information, as well as previously posted claims that were later found to be false, according to Facebook.
Facebook's head of department Tom Allison said.
Facebook began in March by allowing groups to automatically reject new posts identified as containing false information, targeting part of the massive network that has raised particular concern from disinformation watchdogs.

More than 1.8 billion people per month use Facebook Groups,

which allow members to gather around topics ranging from parenting to politics.
However, critics have said groups are ready to spread misinformation or false information because they sometimes have large audiences of like-minded users organized around a particular topic.
One of the improvements was the misinformation filtering tool aimed at making it easier for administrators to manage groups.

“There are over 100 million new group memberships every day on Facebook — kind of incredible,” Mark Zuckerberg, head of Meta, said in a post.
Added a promise to continue building new features for "deeper connections around shared interests".

The evolution of groups is part of Meta's vision for a future where life plays out online in virtual worlds referred to as the metaverse, according to Alison.
.

"Technology is developing at a rapid pace," Allison said at the summit.
"More specifically: We're developing it, investing in products and research that will help make the metaverse a reality."
