Britain's former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday praised the leadership of former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson after the latter pulled out of the Conservative Party leadership race.
Former British finance minister Rishi Sunak on Monday praised the leadership of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson after the latter withdrew from the Conservative Party leadership race.
Mr. Sunak, who is now likely to succeed Liz Truss as the first British Prime Minister of Indian origin,
Johnson said he has led the UK through some of the toughest challenges including Brexit, the launch of the COVID vaccine and the war in Ukraine.
“Boris Johnson presented Brexit and the great vaccine launch. He led our country through some of the toughest challenges we have ever faced, then confronted Putin and his barbaric war in Ukraine.
We will always be grateful to him for that,” Sunak tweeted.
"Although he has decided not to run for prime minister again, I really hope he continues to contribute to public life at home and abroad," he added.
The United Kingdom is set to have its first Indian Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, after Boris Johnson withdrew from the race,
According to British media reports.
Johnson excluded himself from the Conservative leadership race despite claiming he had the needed support.
He said he had come to the conclusion that "this simply wouldn't be the right thing to do" because "you can't govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament," The Independent reported.
He also added that this is due to the lack of agreement with Rishi Sunak and Benny Mordaunt. "I'm afraid the best thing is that I don't allow my candidacy to move forward and commit my support to whoever succeeds," he said.
Johnson added: "I think I have a lot to offer but I'm afraid this is simply not the time.
"I think I'm in a good position to win the Conservatives in 2024 -
And I can confirm tonight that I have cleared the very big hurdle of 102 nominations, including Proposer and Two, and can submit my nomination tomorrow."
“There is a very good chance I will be successful in the election with members of the Conservative Party -
And I can already go back to Downing Street on Friday."
"But over the past days I have unfortunately come to the conclusion that this simply wouldn't be the right thing to do. You cannot govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament," he continued, The Independent reported. .
