Rishi Sunak Confirms Will Run For Britain PM, Has Support of 128 MPs

He already has the support of well over 100 MPs -- a minimum requirement to bag the top job.

Former British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, one of the candidates for the next Prime Minister, officially announced today that he is running to be the next Conservative Party Leader and Prime Minister. He has already had the support of more than 100 deputies - the minimum requirement to take the top position.

"I want to reform our economy,

Unite our party and advance our country,” he said in a tweet, adding that the choice his party now makes “will decide whether the next generation of British people will have more opportunities than the previous.”

The 42-year-old is the front-runner as he marched forward with the support of at least 128 Conservative MPs,

Even as loyalists to his former boss - Boris Johnson - claimed he had what it took to make the 100 MPs shortlisted.

While Mr Johnson has yet to officially announce his nomination, the competition is taking shape in the form of a three-way battle between Mr Sunak, Mr Johnson and the third leader of the House of Commons, Benny Mordaunt.

Reports said Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak held face-to-face talks late on Saturday.

The BBC and others have reported that former Prime Minister Johnson, who returned from a holiday in the Caribbean earlier in the day with the aim of launching a bold political comeback just weeks after leaving office, met with Sunak to discuss the race.

Liz Truss was forced to resign on her 45th day as prime minister because her plans for tax cuts could not be sustained as there was no clarity on how they would be funded - the shortest term for a prime minister in the UK. Boris Johnson resigned in July after serving three years, due to a series of scandals, such as parties during the Covid lockdown.

Nominations close on Monday.

October 24. The 100 nominations required to be on the final ballot may be submitted by email or in physical, for example, the Rules as detailed on the British Parliament website.
