The head of the Russian-controlled Kherson region in southern Ukraine said on Wednesday that officials loyal to the Kremlin were withdrawing from the region's main city, but vowed that Russian forces would continue the fight.

“The whole administration is already moving today,” on the left bank of the Dnieper, the head of the region installed by Moscow, Vladimir Saldo,

Russian state television said, vowing that Russian forces would "fight to the death" to retain control of the city.

Kherson was the first city to fall to Russian forces after the Kremlin launched its invasion on February 24.

But Ukrainian forces have been increasingly close to the city in recent weeks as part of a successful counteroffensive.
