The Ukrainian military accused Russia on Sunday of large-scale destruction of civilian ships moored on the banks of the Dnipro River in the occupied southern Kherson region that Kyiv forces are trying to capture.

This has fueled speculation that Moscow's forces are preparing to retreat to the other side.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian General Staff said in a statement that fuel for the destroyed ships had leaked into the river delta and also accused Moscow's forces of confiscating ships' engines and other equipment.

The Ukrainian General Staff gave no explanation for Moscow's actions. The destruction of civilian ships will prevent the Ukrainian forces from using them if they decide to cross to the eastern side in the event of any Russian withdrawal.
