Pakistan's Punjab Assembly has approved a resolution by majority vote against Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, demanding his trial for high treason for consulting his "fugitive" older brother Nawaz Sharif in London on the appointment of a new army chief.
Minister of Parliament Affairs of Punjab Basharat Raja presented the resolution in the House of Representatives seeking action against Prime Minister Shahbaz under Article 6 (Treason) of the Constitution.
Punjab is ruled by the party of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and its ally, the Pakistan Muslim League.
The resolution states that the Prime Minister consulted one of the fugitives - Nawaz Sharif, a three-time ex-minister of Pakistan - in London two days ago regarding the appointment of a new army chief,
Which not only amounts to the prime minister's oath preventing him from sharing sensitive matters with people he has no connection with, but an insult to the military establishment.
The Pakistani Prime Minister was in London for the state funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
He met Nawaz Sharif during his stay in the city and discussed with him the appointment of the next army chief.
Nawaz Sharif has been living in London since November 2019 after the Lahore High Court granted him eight weeks bail on medical grounds.
Before leaving for London, Nawaz Sharif was serving a seven-year prison sentence at Al-
Azizia corruption case in Lot Lakhbat prison in Lahore.
The current Army Chief of Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, is scheduled to retire in late November this year.
The coalition government led by Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (North) party said it would consult with allied parties and senior army officers to appoint a new army chief.
The movement, which is an opposition in the center, also demanded action on charges of treason against Shahbaz Sharif after Federal Minister Khurram said the prime minister had met the supreme leader of the Muslim League-in-exile Nawaz Sharif in London to consult on the appointment of the new army. Head and other matters.
Mr. Khan, who is also the Chairman of PTI,
He also criticized Shahbaz Sharif for his advice in appointing the next army chief with his eldest brother on the run in London.
